Experimental Portrait: Amanda Choe - The Opposite of Chocolate Header

So Amanda asked to take photos for her blog awhile ago for the new blog layout which you guys can check at The Opposite of Chocolate and it was more on abstract where she doesn't want her face in it and we discuss on some possibilities and themes base on her blog layout, it needed to be landscape and colorful.

I didn't post the picture up the last time as we were still waiting for her .com to be launch.

So here the the uncrop shoots for her header and few picture that we took for experimental purpose.

most of the picture were taken with off-camera flash.

testing out the light and a group shoot where we are missing Daryl.

New Toy : Phottix Aster Wireless Flash Trigger PT-V4

I have always been wanting to get creative with flash for a long time just that playing with strobe its not only difficult but expensive at the same time.

Coming from Canon to Wirelessly trigger your camera there are many options like having a 7D, 2 units of 580EX2, or 1 unit 580EX2 and 1 unit 430Ex2, radio poppers, pocket wizards, and etc. And all this would cost a huge damage to my wallet as i am not making much money out of photography so i decided to opt for a cheap one, got mine like for RM120.

The wireless trigger i bought is Phottix Aster Wireless Flash Trigger PT-V4 and it can be trigger either by radio frequency or optically by flash. the main reason i bought this over the more famous and cheaper tetra was because its a low profile flash trigger and feels more solid for a cheap stuff.

The only down side is that it does not support ETTL flash readings like radio popper and pocket wizard with cost thousand, so i need full manual on camera and on flash to take picture which makes it hard to be used during events.

Here's how it looks like, i didn't took the picture, got it over Google. and a few try out shoots below with my brother.

Couple Portraits: Niniek & Daryl

This session was actually for me to try out couple/ engagement / personal portrait with a fun, relax, candid style of mood. i am not sure if you guys know that i love how anna-rina and jenny sun portrays portrait with emotions in it. so i thought i tried it out with two good friends of mine since they are very willing and its easier for me working with people i know before doing it for people i dont.

The main idea for this session is for me to add to my portfolio and also promote a valentines day couple promotion for couple that are interested in giving each other a special and yet different gift with this portrait session of the both of them. since valentines day is sooo close, i dont think it would work out so instead i will be promoting for regular couple/ engagement / personal lifestyle portrait.

Portrait : Soyan, Location: KLPAC

Soyan wanted to get some shots taken of her before she leaves Malaysia and continues her studies in Aussie. She also suggested to head down to KLPAC/Sentul Park for the shoot, as she said and i heard was pretty awesome, which it turn out to be. The skies that day were really good as it was really cloudy and there is little direct sunlight.

while we were there, there are many other places to take awesome pictures as the guards kept on chasing us away from those location like an abandon British house, wires and etc etc.

For this set of picture i decide to set a tone for all the pictures which is warmth. i am currently really addicted to Photoshop and i think its really really bad. the main reason being is that i got a few new awesome actions to play with.

still find it pretty hard to capture peoples emotions.

Bored on a Hot sunday afternoon, so decided to dig up some old photos and practice Photoshop with some new techniques i learn from youtube and books and these are the somewhat end result.

Photoshop is really a great tool to help photographers save some wrongly expose shots, composition and help photographers to add an entirely different mood too a picture. Photoshop it limitless from my point of view as there is so much things you can do with it

this picture below lose some details when i uploaded it over blogger, no idea why.

Was playing with texture with the picture above.

Portrait: Hanie Hidayah Theme: New York !

Went to Hanie's House the other day to try out some experimental photography as her sister has this huge art of the Manhattan from a bird's eye view and we thought that it would be great as a backdrop.

Then i went to look around for props to make the shot diff and found loads of shades hence the Shade / New York theme.

Hung the shade with white treads on a cloth hanger and ta - da!

I love the mood created in this picture

Isn't the lighting just amazing, this is done without any strobes and its all indoor, we shoot her through a huge door where the sun light is diffuse nicely.

Family and Baby Portraits: Maxine Ng

My High School Teacher/ friend/ "Mom" came back from Perth just last week, so a few of us decided to visit her as usual. But this time there was something different, she just gave birth on July to a super duper cute little baby girl named Maxine.

So while i was there a took a few chance to photograph Baby Maxine and the Ng family. Maxine was great in front of the camera surprisingly cause i mange to get a few shots with eye contact for her.

Took a chance to take portraits of Soyan just before my knee surgery so that i'll have something to do after the surgery to burn some time.

The weather on that day was really bad, it's been gloomy this past month... im sure a lot of photogs notice this... and its really bad for photography..

But i guess you just have to use whatever lighting is given and make the best out of it..

HDR Pulau Perhentian - Blue Boat

Yet another HDR, this is about the longest post processing i have did for a HDR to make it as sharp as noise free till today.

What i did: Automate HDR in CS4, adjust here and there and save in 16bit .Tiff file > transfer it to photomatix and use detail enhancer to bumb the HDR effect > back to CS4 for final adjustments and added boarders.

this picture was also taken in 3 exposure during my trip to perhentian island during mid sem break.

Why HDR looks more outstanding compare to normal picture?

This is because our eyes unlike camera can see 3 different levels, the highlight, the shadows and the mid tones.

Our camera cant pick up all the details in these areas therefore we use 3 exposure bracketing to capture all this tones and then merge them into a nicely expose HDR

Putrajaya HDR - The Bridge

Another HDR from putrajaya.

This time was taken around 4-5 Pm, before set.

But the good thing was that the sky was really blue that day which really brings out the skies..

Again, this HDR was done hand held,

3 exposure bracketing,

edited in PhotomatixPro3 (best software for HDR)

and Photoshop CS4

I am starting to love HDR now, but the thing is that to shoot HDR you need the right Subject, right colors, right timing, right exposure and right light then only you are able to get a good HDR.

and not forgetting good post processing skills...

cause i have no idea how the hell people produce no noise HDR...

the usual group went out taking pictures again, but this time it was a Sunday

Location : Pudu Jail and supposedly Central Market but it rain so went Pavillion for a chill out session.

Time: Supposedly 10am leave, but being us, reached there around 12 and had our lunch

Whats in the bag?: Normal gears, plus Reflector! really helps...

Lens: Mostly shoot with my trusty Sigma 24-70 EX DG MARCO and few were with 50mm 1.8 II with 40D

i ask her to pick up some rocks and drop it down and shoot at high frame rates to cature it drooping down...

The soft focus effect was created by hiding behind the lalang and using it as a depth of field...

Photography @ Old KTM Station, Kuala Lumpur

So last Friday after class, me and the bunch headed downtown KL to snap some photos.

the location was actually Hanie's idea where had a photo shoot not long ago there.

the place was the KTM station in KL next to the huge blue Masjid near the national library and Dataran Merdeka.

The train station had the old classic look which is prefect for Black and White photos.

Besides that, we also went to the top of Heritage Station Hotel which is also located in the station.

The way up to the rooftop was freaking old skool. Standing in a elevator of 200 years old and not knowing how its works is not a good combination.

The down side bout this shooting session was that the sky was damn wash out... white white white.

Putra jaya is basically good for lots of photography, its not that far from KL, very accesible, you will never get bored of taking pictures there.

There are just so many photography oppurtunity there; like landscape, Night photography, Nature, sunset/sunrise, potrait, light trails, street and etc

Things to keep in mind when going the Putrajaya for a photography session;

TRIPOD! Zoom Lens, Wide Angle Lens, colourful props, colour tourch lights(at night), FOOD!, and good walking shoes.

Went to Putrajaya the other day with Tee Juan , was late by like 10-20 minutes to caputure more of the awesome sunset but we did manage to get alot of nice shots...

The one above is the best shot for me at that night and its unedited...

we werent that prepared for that night as we want to do some awesome light painting but didnt manage to as we did not have tourch light...

So i guess we might be heading back there one more time to light paint and caputer the other bridge and the alien spaceship building

For this picture, i post process monochrome with colour mixer which i find is the best way to convert a picture to BW, in colour mixer we are able to choose the amount of RBG colours we want in a monochrome picture (example: 20R 20B 60G) if the greens really pop out the tone...

Went to Gopeng Nature Resort yesterday, with an orang asli as a guide to find for this huge beautiful yet smelly flower, The trek to find the Rafflesia took around 1 hour plus.

Reach the place found two of them along with a few dead ones and some other waiting to bloom. they didn't really smell from far, but if you would have to go near a get a sniff out of it, it really does smells like a dead meat.

It actually got me to wonder how did this plants knows how does a carcass smells like and how did they know that insects are attracted to those smell?

I didn't really got many nice pictures of it, as the lighting wasn't that nice, and the camera was being handheld the whole time.

Rinpa Eshidan - off topic

"Rinpa" is a word created by the founders of the group meaning "to bring people together, while "Eshidan" essentially means "art crew." The Rinpa Eshidan is a team of artists brought together by a common creative expression.

Rinpa Eshidan, i would say that they are one of the best art crew i have ever seen, they produce really good art work and video tape it in mostly stop motion and have really nice music to it as well.

I just saw one of their new art work in YouTube featured video, and i would just like to share it with you guys.

5 pictures taken with my Sony EricssonW810i 2 mega pixel camera photo... Stitch using adobe photoshop CS3, edited the colors and sharpen the image...

result: pretty impressive for me.

The sun was setting magnificently when i taking a break from studying for my final in Monash University, i didn't have "candy" with me at that time, but i just have to capture the amazing view... the colours of the sky was just so colorful... So my Hand phone came into handy this time... If only i have my DSLR with me take time... ish...

Futher Look into Black and White Pictures

Normally, people just desaturated their pictures to plain black and white(BW). BW pictures can have a more impact in peoples eye by just spending a small amount of time in Photoshop... Putting more effort into editing a BW picture will really bring out the mood that you are trying to portray in a BW picture.

You can add slight color in to your BW images, Make it look as if it just came out of a old flim camera (think 120mm BW flim taken by an old rollieflex or yashica), you can add vignetting, you can make it look darker/brighter, add some noise to bring in the mood, or even add some tear marks to really bring out those grandmother days pictures.

Old pictures are mostly underexpose or over expose, keep that in mind next time while editing BW pictures; back in those days, there weren't any auto mode for cameras,only full manual, and that's the reason old pictures tend to be over and under expose.

Here this the picture after it is desaturated (Ctrl +Shift+ u in photoshop). now this picture bring out the mood of a old kopitiam, but much more can be done to this picture.

Here's the final product; In this picture, i feel that it really brings out the atmosphere of an old kopitiam.

This is what i did for this picture:

-Bring up a little of the reds

-Added vignetting

-Added a noise

-Played with levels and curve

All in less then 5 minutes. Here's an advice from an amateur, any pictures can look better with just 5 minutes touch ups in photoshop. Even the best picture can look differently with just 5 minutes of photoshop.

Post Box ; Video on making background blank & white

I would say this is one of my fave pictures ever taken, i actually saw a picture similar to this picture in one of my not so close friends Flickr Here, i was wondering where on earth did he get took such a nice picuture of a vintage post box...

I only find out that it is outside the post office in fraser hill when i went up with my family few months ago...

Here it is,

I edited it to give it a more vintage look, add vignetting in Adobe Lightroom, pump up the colors in CS3 and sharpen the image a bit... I love the colors in this picture, the reds and the greens really blends well...

Here another one to give it a more old school look by destaturating the backgroud/leaf and having the reds stand out...

So tell me, which one do you prefer?

i also send this picture to the last months Digital Photography Magazine Malaysia. Sadly, i didn't get any reply...

If you guys would like to know how to destaturate the background or make the background black and white, here a quick video on it

Try seaching more on this guys tutorials, its realy easy and really fast...

This blog is where i share my thoughts, my pictures, my daily rant, my fave videos, what i do for fun, reviews, tutorials maybe and who knows...

I wont be writing much in this blog, i know people these days hate reading... this blog will be more on me posting up pictures and my thought of it and i hope that you guys will give me some thought of it as well... Critics are always welcome, but don't go so hard on me, i just started this journey of photography...

The weapon of choice that i use is the Canon 40D and pair up with two lens... i also call my camera "Candy"

If you ask me what style of photography appeals to me... i would say none; Photography is really subjective in everyone eye... in a photography competition, anyone could win, depending on the judges for that time sees it, if there would be a change of judges, the winner wouldn't be the same... as everyone has different views in every picture taken...

This is where my blogging "adventure" begins, and i hope it wouldn't end as soon as it starts... so do bug me to update...
